1. What is CFC Gas?

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are fully halogenated paraffin hydrocarbons that contain only carbon, chlorine, and fluorine. Synthesized as non-toxic, non-flammable, and volatile solvents, they became ubiquitous in the 20th century as refrigerants (Freon), propellants, and solvents.

Common variants include:

3. Why are CFCs Dangerous?

Ozone Layer Depletion

CFCs are incredibly stable in the lower atmosphere, surviving up to 100 years. However, once they reach the stratosphere, ultraviolet (UV) radiation breaks them down, releasing Chlorine atoms. A single chlorine atom can destroy over 100,000 ozone molecules, stripping Earth of its primary shield against harmful UV rays.

  • Human Health: High concentrations of CFCs can cause central nervous system depression, dizziness, tremors, and in extreme cases, fatal cardiac arrhythmia or asphyxiation.

  • Ecosystem Damage: Increased UV radiation due to ozone thinning inhibits photosynthesis in plants, damages marine phytoplankton (the base of the ocean food chain), and increases the risk of skin cancer and cataracts in humans.
